Yesterday I mentioned a kiln. Here's why.

When I'm not doing this, I make pottery. Real pottery, wheel and clay and glaze, and a kiln that runs hotter than you'd think a thing in a studio should be allowed to run. And the kiln has taught me more about starting a business than any book on my shelf.

Here's what happens. You make the piece. You glaze it. You put it in, you close the door, you turn it on, and then for many hours you have absolutely no say in what happens. You can't check. You can't adjust. You can't feel more ready. The chemistry does what the chemistry does, and you find out at the end, when it's cool enough to open.

And the lesson isn't "trust the process." The lesson is that you learn nothing from the piece you never fire. I can read about glaze chemistry for a year. I can watch every video. I can feel very, very prepared. And I will know less than the person who fired one ugly bowl and looked at it. The bowl teaches. The reading doesn't. Ready isn't a feeling you arrive at before the kiln. Ready is something you find out after.

I bring this up because the most common reason people give me for not starting is some version of "I'm not ready yet." And I understand it completely. I felt it before my first client, before my first hire, before I recorded my first video with my actual face on it. Every single time, ready showed up after I started, never before. Not once has it come first. Not once, in over a decade.

So let's be honest about what waiting for ready actually is. It's asking the kiln to tell you the result before you close the door. It doesn't do that. Nothing does.

What I can do is make the first firing as low-stakes as it's possible to make it. The extended 30 days. The system already loaded. The room full of people doing the same thing beside you. That's me shrinking the bowl down to something so small it doesn't matter if the first one comes out ugly. It probably will. That's the point. The second one won't.

The thing to settle today: you are not going to feel ready, and that's not a signal about you. It's just the order things happen in. Start, then ready.

P.S. I still have my first bowl. It's genuinely awful. It's also the reason every bowl after it was less awful, which is the only way anyone has ever gotten good at anything.
