No safety net. No regrets.

I'm always a bit nervous to tell this story.

Because the way I did things is probably not the way I'd recommend to you or anyone I care about. But it's hard to argue with the results. And there's something strange that happens to the human brain when you commit fully and burn the boats.

Here's the short version:

I used to be a pilot. Business jets. Sounds glamorous, right?

The problem is, the whole point of being a pilot is flying away somewhere. And I'm a homebody. I like my routine. I like my friends and family. I like having control over my schedule.

So one day, I just couldn't take it anymore.

I had what can only be described as a nervous breakdown. I quit. Hung up my metaphorical flying hat (we didn't actually wear hats flying business jets, but I like the image). And I haven't flown a plane since.

That was about 13 years ago.

Now, obviously, I wasn't financially independent at the time. I needed to work. But I had no idea what I was going to do.

Fortunately, my wife suggested I look into marketing. I was immediately hooked. And the rest is history.

Looking back, I probably should have been more strategic. Should have seen the writing on the wall earlier. Should have taken steps to prepare for the transition instead of just... leaping.

But here's the thing: there's something incredibly powerful about painting yourself into a corner.

When there's no fallback, you figure it out. You climb the walls like some kind of Spider-Man. You make things work because you have to.

I'm not saying you should quit your job tomorrow with no plan. But I am saying this:

At some point, you have to stop waiting for the perfect moment and just decide.

The perfect moment doesn't exist. Readiness is a myth. The people who build the lives they want are the ones who start before they feel ready.

Last year I had a conversation with a chiropractor who was spending $3,000 a month on ads. Good ads, actually. The leads were coming in. Twenty, thirty new inquiries a week. On paper, everything looked great. But here's what was actually happening: those leads would hit his inbox around 2pm. He'd see them at 6pm after his last adjustment. He'd tell himself he'd follow up tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning would get busy. By the time he actually reached out (sometimes two or three days later),...

I want to tell you about something I've never really talked about publicly. A few years ago, I was in Nice, France for a work trip. Beautiful city. Great food. And just 20 minutes away from Monaco. The Monaco Grand Prix was happening that weekend. If you know anything about Formula 1, you know Monaco is the race. The most prestigious track on the calendar. Cars screaming through narrow streets, inches from the barriers. I'd wanted to see it in person my entire life. And I was right there....

There are three things I believed early in my career that kept me stuck for years. I'm guessing you've heard them too. Maybe you still believe them. I hope not. Because they're lies. Lie #1: "You need to work harder." This one almost killed me. (Figuratively. Mostly.) I spent years grinding 14 to 16 hour days, convinced that more effort was the answer. If the business wasn't growing fast enough, I just needed to push harder. The truth? I didn't need to work harder. I needed better systems....
