There's an exercise I do at least once a year. Ideally every three to six months, but I'll be honest: it's not fun. So sometimes I put it off longer than I should. It's called a Time Audit. And it's one of the most valuable things you can do for your business. Possibly the most valuable. Here's how it works: For three days (ideally midweek, like Tuesday through Thursday), you track every single thing you do in 15-minute increments. Send an email? Write it down. Work on a strategy? Write it down. Get a cup of coffee and stare out the window contemplating the meaning of life? Write it down. The goal is to create an honest picture of how you're actually spending your time. Not how you think you're spending it. How you actually are. Then you go through each item and put it in one of two categories: RGA: Revenue Generating Activity (lead gen, sales calls, client outreach... anything that directly leads to money) nRGA: Non-Revenue Generating Activity (everything else) I've done this exercise more times than I can count. And every single time, I'm shocked at the amount of trivial, inconsequential tasks eating up my day. Checking email for the 11th time. Scrolling social media after posting something. Reorganizing files that didn't need reorganizing. Here's the uncomfortable truth: If you're not making the money you want to make, it's almost certainly because too much of your time is going to non-revenue generating activities. Not because you're lazy. Not because you're not talented. Because the urgent keeps crowding out the important. And without systems to handle the repetitive stuff, you end up spending your best hours on tasks that don't move the needle. The fix isn't working more hours.
